Social Studies

Social studies provides opportunities for students to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge that will enable them to become engaged, active, informed and responsible citizens. It involves the study of people in relation to each other and to their world, and is an inquiry-based interdisciplinary subject that draws upon history, geography, ecology, economics, law, philosophy, political science and other social science disciplines. 

Social Study Lessons For All Level

01.

Elementary

Students will study other communities to expand their social horizons. They will learn to appreciate that they belong to a larger community of people in which there are additional opportunities to realize the benefits of co-operation and sharing.

02.

High School

Students will study various units related to history. The objective is to demonstrate how the past has a connection to the present, and consequences to the future. They do so by applying a critical thinking lens to various moments in history.

Ancient Mesopotamia

This section looks at how the first societies organized, namely the first civilization of Mesopotamia. Students look at how writing influenced the development of societies, and the emergence of civilization. 

Ancient Greece

This section explores the development of democracy in Ancient Greece, all the while studying the unique experiences throughout various city-states of Greece. Students also look at the important aspects related to the ancient Greek civilization. 

Ancient Rome

This section explores the lasting effects of the Roman Empire, as well as how it shaped the classical period of history. It will look at the development of the Roman Empire, all the way to its collapse. 

Medieval Age

This section explores the Christianization of Europe, as well as the development of individual kingdoms following the collapse of Rome. 

European Expansion

This section will look at the causes and consequences of expansion in North America. It will do so namely by studying the significant explorers and conquests.

Industrial Revolution

This section will explore the consequences of the industrial revolution on Britain, and other parts of the world. It will also look more in depth on the development of industry and significant inventions.

American Revolution

This section will look at the causes for the American revolution, as well as the lasting consequences of the revolution. It will also explore the creation of the democratic state and associated rights and freedoms. 

French Revolution

This section will look at the causes of the French revolution and collapse of monarchy. It then explores how this led to rights and freedoms in France, and other parts of the world.

Canadian Colonization 1608-1840

This section will look at the settlement of Europeans in North America, as well as contact with the Indigenous Nations already living there. It will also explore specific European explorers of North America and the political system of Indigenous nations. Finally, it will look more closely at the development of the European settlements.

Canadian Federal System 1840-1896 (Ministry Exam)

This section will look at the formation of the Canadian Federal system, as well as the development of nationalism and autonomy in Canada. 

Quebec and the Quiet Revolution 1945-1980 (Ministry Exam)

This section will look at Quebec society under the Duplessis government. It will look at the quiet revolution and its impact on Quebec society.

Contemporary Quebec 1980 -present time (Ministry Exam)

This section will look at the political, social, economic, and environment choices of contemporary Quebec.

World War 1

This section will look at the causes of World War One, as well as the effects of globalism and imperialism.  

World War 2

This section will look at Word War 2 and consequences of previous war that influenced the development of World War 2. It furthermore explores the differences of political ideologies.

Cold War

This section will look at the Cold War following World War 2. It will identify the different political, social, and economic ideologies that will lead to the tensions around the world.
